It’s been a moving few days in the company of Kirstie Caddel’s story which I first understood through Brian Smith’s article in the 1988 Shetland Folk Book Number 8. Today the wonderful team at Shetland Archives got to the bottom of my unanswered questions and inspired a trip to Commercial Street to re-trace Kirstie’s footsteps. Nineteenth century Lerwick is now much closer in my mind’s eye. Of all the songs I’ve written, this is undoubtedly the hardest, and probably the most worthwhile.
