On Saturday night I enjoyed a wonderful theatrical experience on Nairn beach. I attended ‘Drift’, a Vision Mechanics and Nordland Visual Theatre co-production telling the story of Betty Mouat’s 1886 journey from Shetland to Norway. My previous blog post explains how I wrote a song on this topic in early 2014, so I was excited to see how Betty’s tale would be interpreted for an outdoor exhibition. Director, Symon Macintyre, has orchestrated the work of artists and musicians to deliver an emotional, immersive experience which cleverly explores new dimensions of Betty’s solitude. The songs and tunes on the production’s mp3 player were beautifully performed and the visual art was varied and imaginative. It was great chatting to Symon about the background to this piece, and the team were kind enough to listen to my song in the evening sun. You can experience ‘Drift’ on Skaw Beach, Unst, 10th-13th July, in St Cyrus 23rd-26th July and on Laig Beach, Eigg, 6th-9th August.
